The Ginger Sass Cocktail #SundaySupper
[insert fanfare and flourish here]
It's also Sunday and time for Sunday Supper. It's the only day of the week I am committed to cooking (except today!) Today, I'm making drinks.
Can you make a fantastic & creative drink (or dessert or meal) by using only 5 ingredients or less? Of course you can! This week's #SundaySupper menu has all sorts of recipes to serve up minimal-ingredient recipes without sacrificing anything. Come celebrate with me today (and the rest of the week)
Visit host, Alice of Hip Foodie Mom, as we share these dishes & drinks around the family table.
People always describe me as sassy. Sassy is just a euphemism for 'opinionated'. I feel strongly about a lot of things and I have platforms like my blog, Twitter and my podcast to broadcast what I think about food and life in general. I even have a secret Twitter account @masassybritches for when I am feeling REALLY sassy (oops, not a secret anymore!).
My other secret: I love to drink. Not to get drunk, just drink. One small cocktail or a local craft beer and I'm good for the night. Most of my family likes to enjoy alcohol, too. When we get together, it's always a party. Be it a funeral, a wedding or an unexpected Sunday visit, we always have a good time. You could say... It's always Miller time at our house!

I also always have a good time at my favorite watering hole, Recreation Billiards. You can find me there most Thursday and Saturday nights. I don't go there to play pool; I hate geometry. I go there to drink and hangout with my friends. Since 1947, this place has been serving only beer, wine and local history. It's like a home away home from and serves as a pseudo living room and front porch to everyone who goes there.
In late 2013, the basement of Rec (named Pete's Cellar, after the late owner) opened up a speakeasy-like bar called Whiskybox. The focus is whiskey (my liquor of choice) and my favorite drink is called Mister Gingerson. Whiskey barrel bitters, fresh ginger, lemon juice, simple syrup and whiskey make up the best cocktail I've ever had. It's sweet, spicy and if you're not careful, finished in an instant!
It used to be called the Ginger Dick (because it was made with George Dickel) but the name was changed, much to this sassy birthday girl's chagrin. Saying the word "Dick" aloud in mixed company should be a right of passage. I'm making it a right of passage by making my own version of the Ginger Dick and calling it the Ginger Sass, because you've got to be a little bit sassy to call Richard by his nickname.

ReplyDeleteSo I have a funny story to tell you about the name Dick. My brother-in-law's name is Richard, now here in the UK it isn't that uncommon for people to still use the nickname Dick. Although it is really only the older generation that wouldn't find it funny. But for my poor brother-in-law growing up in the late 80's early 90's it was a burden of a name. You see the main problem is our last name is Hunter. :) So with a name like Dick Hunter he didn't have a chance. Thankfully he has an amazing sense of humour and if anyone could survive with such a name it was him. This doesn't have much to do with this fabulous drink you made but your post reminded me of this story and I thought I would share it.
ReplyDeleteHope you had a very happy birthday, Nikki! This drink sounds like something we'd love. Pinning on my Recipes to Try board!
